Mr Selfridge – The History And Power of Fashion

Mr Selfridge – The History And Power of Fashion

Mr Selfridge – Jeremy Piven

Harry Gordon Selfridge opened the famous store ‘Selfridges London‘ on the 15th March 1909. Selfridges London, is Britain’s second largest department store. The success of the store was instant. It took thirty police officers to hold back the crowd on its first day of business. Selfridges was voted Best Department Store in the World in the Global Department Store Summit, Paris 2012.

The Beauty Hall – 1910

Harry knew that designing the perfume and cosmetics hall on the ground floor would make it the optimal place to get professional advice and experience the cosmetic heaven. At the time he also wanted to make sure that the smell of horse manure would not enter into the store, further spurring the idea for a large collection of perfumes. From day one, Guerlain – the famous French perfume house – was one of his favorites and was sold within the store.

Labels That Are Still Stocked In The Store From Today

Did you know that Vaseline was developed in 1870 and still remains a family essential item – as well as having a permanent residence in every woman’s make up bag. Delvaux, the oldest fine luxury leather goods company in the world was and still is sold in Selfridges today.

Men’s Shoe Department

Today, Selfridges London caters from high end shopping to everyday retail therapy. For me, one of the highlights of the store is the men’s shoe department. It has a total of 72,000 shoes, wow. One of the staff members from Selfridges recently informed me that, the big trend right now is the slippers. He explained, that you can get them custom made exactly to your liking. They are finding the success of this shoe department, to be incredible.

Styles to Look Out For – 2013

It will come as no surprise that the influence of Jeremy Piven’s wardrobe, playing Mr Selfridge on ITV, is one trend men need to take notice of. High end tailoring is one factor that will determine what men will be wearing this year – just head to Saville Row for inspiration. For a more casual affair I am banking on the dark  blue or the brown velvet blazer to be a must have item for 2013. Making sure that you incorporate lots of layering and funky vests into your outfits. As for the hair, the epic David Beckham of the 90’s style, will be returning –  just don’t forget your fudge wax to get the look perfect!

The Set is Spectacular

The set of the new show Mr Selfridge – a beautiful, opulent and huge reconstruction of a 1909 Selfridges – is astounding. Glass cabinets encase perfume bottles and cosmetic cases. Though the set designer was able to find original items on eBay, they wanted everything to look shiny and brand new so they made most of the props themselves.
