Oliver Spencer – London Collections: Men 2013
To be accessible to both the fashion world and the man on the street is no easy task so to see the Oliver Spencer A/W ’13 collection accomplish this feat with such aplomb made for compelling viewing.
Spencer seems to have mastered the art of transition, creating clothes that work with models but also – the so-called – every day man (a phrase I am not entirely comfortable with even as I write it, for aren’t we all just everyday people when it comes down to it?)
Blurring the lines between formal tailoring, with classic winter macs, heavyweight leather jackets and sartorially elegant suits with the more adventurous high-rolled jersey bottoms and large, bold stripes emblazoned across both jackets and trousers, made for a collection that once again proved Spencer has his finger firmly on the pulse of what the modern gent is looking for in an outfit.
That for me has to be the key, not just for this show, but as a symbol of LC:M. We need the J.W Andersons and the Meadham Kirchoffs of this world to shock us out of our daily ennui but if we are to build the bridges between fashion and the consumer, it is the likes of Oliver Spencer we should be standing to applaud.
