Elysium Boutique Beach Front Villa Hotel – Galle Sri Lanka

Elysium Boutique Beach Front Villa Hotel – Galle Sri Lanka

The Elysium boutique villa hotel is for rent as a complete villa or on an individual room basis. The villa is located on Mihiripenna beach in Thalpe which is 6 kilometres east of Galle. Galle is well known for Galle Fort, a colonial town initially built by the Portuguese but later fortified by the Dutch. Galle Fort is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 423 years maintains a polished appearance and has been awarded a UNESCO world heritage site.

Elysium boutique villa hotel, is located directly on the Indian Ocean and is part of a collection of three luxury boutique hotels in the Galle area. These hotels are amongst the very best and most luxurious in Asia. The Elysium was designed by a renowned Australian architect, and has recently undergone extensive renovation and improvement.

We arrived by train from Colombo at Thalpe station which was quiet an experience as we traveled for more than two hours in third class. The only first class wagon was not available anymore as it is under going refurbishment. From the station it was a three minute trishaw ride to get to the villa.

Gardens

The entrance of the villa is located next to the main road. We entered through a gate and behind the wall we straight went into the garden area. This is an area of grass and palm trees from where you can go to the individual room bungalows or enter the main double storey villa. Walking to the main villa we passed a lovely lily pond with three small islands.

Main Villa

The main villa has a very bright and airy open feel to it and is very spacious. On the ground floor, there is the indoor dining and breakfast area which is a big round table which easily can sit 12. There are also two smaller tables which are ideal for couples. The main villa is furnished with a significant contemporary art collection as well as antiques and furnishings from India, Sri Lanka and China. In fact, this art was found all around the villa and individual rooms.

On the second floor, there is a lovely seating area for guest to relax and enjoy each other’s conversation. This floor also has a pool table for guest use. I absolutely loved the two cupboards on display here with the many individual drawers.

Pool Area

From the main villa, we had an excellent view of the pool area. On the left site there are two bungalows and on the right hand site is one more pool side bungalow and a covered seating area. The pool faces the Indian Ocean and has a shallow end which is ideal for smaller children. At the end of the pool is a lovely garden area which goes towards the beach. I loved the friendly visitor, a giant lizard which frequents this garden.

Sea Terrace

At the end of the garden, there are gates that open up to the beach. It is not recommended to swim in the ocean here as the seas are rough, however, one kilometre away there is a much calmer stretch of beach. Next to the beach, there is a lovely wooden terrace with plenty of seating and umbrellas to enjoy the sounds and sight of the Indian ocean. It is a great place to enjoy a cocktail.

Family Room

Elysium can be rented as a whole or on an individual room basis. In total there are five rooms available, one family room which can handle six, and four double rooms. As I was travelling with the kids we had the family room. My children loved the two sets of bunk beds with mosquito netting and individual lights. The family room which has a size of 70m2 consisted of a large double bed with mosquito netting and the two sets of bunk beds. A family of six can easily stay here. There is plenty of storage, a triple sofa and two individual chairs. To handle six guests the bathroom consists of two sinks, two toilets and two showers. There is also an outdoor shower, but it can only be used with your swimwear on as it is not private. There is no TV in the room in fact there is no TV at all at Elysium villa, remember this is a holiday. The WiFi in the room and throughout the hotel was perfect, it was free, fast and reliable.

Breakfast

The breakfast we had was Western-style with a fresh mixed juice and a fruit platter followed by baked croissants and pain au chocolat. The individual dishes that followed where different types of eggs, french toast and pancakes. All was prepared well and it provided a perfect start to our day.

Conclusion

Although we had an individual room it almost felt we had the whole Elysium villa to ourselves and we felt treated like royalty. The building is so grand and the service so good, and with the absence of other guests, as it was low season, gave us that feeling of royalty with servants. This place is impeccable and serene, I would come back here in a heartbeat.
